This article describes how to get started with GigSky on any carrier-unlocked Apple iPad Wi-Fi + Cellular model, including iPad Air 2 and iPad mini 3 or later. Make sure that you have the latest version of iOS installed on your iPad before starting.
1. Install the GigSky SIM
To use the GigSky mobile data service in your iPad, you must install a GigSky SIM card.
Make sure that the iPad is turned off.
Open the SIM tray. Insert a SIM eject tool into the hole on the SIM tray, then press firmly and push the tool straight in until the tray pops out. Pull out the SIM tray to install the GigSky SIM card. If there’s already a SIM card in the tray, remove it first before installing the GigSky SIM card.
Turn the iPad on.
2. Configure Cellular Data settings
Turn Cellular Data ON
Settings > Cellular Data
Turn Data Roaming ON
Settings > Cellular Data > Cellular Data Options
You might also want to turn on Low Data Mode, as this will pause automatic updates and background tasks which can eat into your data usage.
Set APN to gigsky
Settings > Cellular Data > APN Settings
Make sure the APN for both Cellular Data and LTE setup is set to gigsky:
Turn on LTE
Settings > Cellular Data > Cellular Data Options > Data
3. Configure cellular data usage for apps
To help prevent excessive cellular data usage, set whether cellular data is used for apps and services. Go to Settings > Cellular, and then turn cellular data on or off for any app that can use cellular data. If a setting is off, the iPad will only use Wi-Fi for that service.
Two settings you should turn off here, unless you specifically want to use mobile data for them are:
- Wi-Fi Assist - Automatically uses cellular data when Wi-Fi connectivity is poor
- iCloud Drive - Uses cellular data to transfer documents and data between your iPad and iCloud
Your iPad is now configured to use GigSky Mobile Data.
4. Buy a data plan
To buy a data plan to use with the GigSky SIM card in your iPad, you need to use the GigSky web app, app.gigsky.com. The GigSky iOS app is meant for eSIM-capable iPhones only - you cannot use it to buy a data plan for your iPad.
NOTE:
The first time you arrive in a country, the SIM card, local network, and GigSky servers have to update each other before you can use GigSky Mobile Data. Typically, this takes about 5 minutes. In some exceptional cases, it can take up to 15 minutes.
